IRS 312: Integration Theories and Regionalism

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the course, the students should be able to:

  1. analyse the theory of federalism;
  2. discuss the functionalist and neo-functionalist theories;
  3. explain the internationalist theory;
  4. define the theory of intergovernmentalism;
  5. enumerate the organisational approach;
  6. analyse the conflict approach; and
  7. explain the five-driver approach.
Course Contents

The theory of Federalism that has been popularised by eminent scholars like K.C Wheare (the doyen of federalism), Spinelli, Elazar, Elaigwu and Riker. Other relevant theories to be taught include the functionalist theory, the neo-functionalist theory, the theory of inter- governmentalism, the Liberalist theory, the internationalist theory. The concept of regionalism, the conflict approach, the organisational approach, and the five-driver approach.
