Biography

Malam Ibrahim Usman Yakasai spent 25 years in the National Universities Commission (NUC).  He rose from Principal Information Officer in 1998 to pioneer Director of Corporate Communication in 2015.  He was also a Chief Academic Planning Officer mid-career.

A graduate of Mass Communication from Bayero University, Kano, Malam Yakasai did his NYSC with the New Nigerian Newspapers as a Sub-Editor from 1985-86.  He started his career as a Deputy Features Editor of Today Newspaper in Kaduna in April, 1986 but moved back to the New Nigerian late 1986 as a sub-editor and Senior Reportor in early 1987.  By late 1987, Malam Yakasai moved to Zimbabwe as a Reporter in Zimbabwe Herald in Harare and later moved to Bulawayo Chronicle also in Zimbabwe.  He returned to the New Nigerian in late 1998 as a Member of the Editorial Board and served until 1991.  In 1990 he was among the Pioneer ECOMOG Correspondents who covered the Liberian Civil War.  He moved to the National Teachers Institute (NTI) in Kaduna as a Principal Information Officer, thus beginning a new career as Public Relations Manager.

In 1993, Malam Yakasai moved back to journalism and joined the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) in London as a Producer.  He stayed there for four years and returned to NTI in Nigeria in 1997.

He joined the services of the NUC in 1998.  He participated in every Accreditation Exercise between 1998 and 2021 in addition to several monitoring and Resource Verification visits.

Malam Yakasai has attended dozens short courses, seminars, conferences in Public Relations, Higher Education and University Administration and Accreditation both onshore and offshore over the last two decades.  He is now a Director in Bayero University, Kano.

He is married with five children.
